Organizations Who Rescue Chinese Crested Dogs
Many people have not even heard of the Chinese Crested dog. The people who have heard of this breed of dog probably think of a small, hairless dog when they hear the name. The Chinese Crested dog is still pretty rare in the United States and it actually comes in two varieties, the Hairless and the Powder Puff that has hair. The Hairless Chinese Crested dog only has hair on its head, feet, and tail. The Powder Puff has hair all over its body. Both the Hairless and the Powder Puff come in numerous colors including solid, mixed and spotted colors. As an adult, this dog is usually around 12 inches in height and no larger than 10 pounds in weight. This dog is playful, loving, and cuddly. It is generally good around children of raised with kids, and is a great dog if trained properly. There are many dog rescue organizations popping up all over the country that rescue Chinese Crested dogs. There are many reasons why this breed may need rescuing such as lack of skin or dental care.
As mentioned earlier, one of the varieties of the Chinese Crested is Hairless. Because this dog does not have hair, the skin requires lots of attention. Exposed skin needs extra care to prevent skin irritations. Many dogs of this breed are allergic to lanolin and wool. If the dog is going to be outside for a while, sunscreen needs to be applied to the dog’s skin to protect from sunburn. In winter months, the dog will require a sweater of some kind to keep warm. Because he does not have hair, this is a great breed for an owner with allergies. The dog’s skin does need to be washed and massaged with oil to maintain healthy skin. If owners are negligent in this area of do not realize what care is needed they may feel overwhelmed by the extra care needed and eventually an organization may need to rescue Chinese Crested dogs from their owners.
Another common health concern with the Chinese Crested dog is dental care. Their teeth must be well maintained to prevent tooth decay. The Hairless variety of this breed is known to lose their teeth early as young adults. They should not be given bones to chew on because they may have an incomplete set of teeth. Once again, owners may not be aware of the special dental needs of this breed and may realize that they cannot afford proper dental care. The organizations that rescue Chinese Crested dogs are committed the to health and well-being of this and all breeds of dogs. They realize that not all dogs can be saved, but do their best to save as many dogs as they can. They give them the vet care that they need and then adopt them into loving families.
